NCJW Mission Statement: NCJW is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding invidiual rights and freedoms. |
|
The history of the NCJW South Cook Section began in 1921 in Chicago Heights, Illinois. That year, the Jewish Ladies Aid Society of Beth Israel Synagogue organized itself into a Section of the National Council of Jewish Women, Chicago Heights Section. The primary purpose was to provide Jewish religious education to the children of families living in the community.
For the next 20 years, the Section functioned as a sisterhood for the synagogue. Besides the responsibilities of a sisterhood, the Section was actively involved in community activities and was a political action group. Most of all the Section undertook the construction, completion, maintenance and retired the mortgage of a building attached to the synagogue called Council House, which no longer exists.
